I wouldn't bother with it on classes that don't have reliable overwatch though - if the troop has neither Opportunist, Rapid Reaction or Sentinel, I'd only take Covering Fire if there was nothing else good, I think. It seems pretty useless until you have it, and once you have it, you'll miss it when its gone. I feel CF is one of those perks that has to be used to be appreciated. Sentinel is incredibly powerful for the Infantryman who's reached top ranks, so removing some of its power is something to give you pause. Sentinel no covering fire - you might not get either shot to go off if none of them move.

Sentinel Covering Fire - you're getting those two overwatch shots unless every enemy in sight hunkers/reloads. I've seen a Chrysallid mid-lunge about to tear out a trooper's throat and my stable-handed Infantry saved his life.Īnd finally, with no Covering Fire sentinel is harder to work with Infantry. Also, the perk is 100% awesome to watch even Chrysallid attacks trigger Covering Fire, which is bad ass. Aliens running to a wall corner and peeking out at you without triggering your overwatch will be hit by a Covering Fire overwatch when they then try to shoot you - this is always useful, but especially in one particular EXALT mission I was hands down saved from multiple threatening shots by this perk due to muddy line of sight. There are also many situations where Covering Fire will proc an overwatch that otherwise would do nothing. Put simply - what if the enemy you're choosing to kill wasn't going to do anything aggressive, but the others were? Add on to this that the intimidation factor of Overwatch vs the AI can be applied to actions as well through CF and you can attempt to bully them into hunkering/doing nothing useful. There's just some situations where if the shot specifications are the same due to Opportunist, it can be smarter to react to enemy action in case that action is the only offensive one taken by the enemy on that turn rather than try and predict which enemy will attack you, you simply react to the first one that does, thus protecting your troops most efficiently. You react at the shooting one with the same shot specifications as normal and kill him. One overwatches, the other shoots at you. With Opportunist on Infantry, you do ignore the OW penalty so it's a good configuration to the Infantry's primary tool. Ignoring overwatch penalty, Covering Fire is useful as a reactionary way of taking a shot.
